Fallingwater, the Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, is located about 90 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, outside Mill Run, in Fayette County. Named Building of the Century in 2000 by the American Institute of Architects, it is also a National Historic Landmark. The home is set within 5,000 acres of lush wilderness, and the surrounding environs, called Laurel Highlands, offer hiking, canoeing, and other outdoor pursuits to enjoy while you're in the area.
Local Food
  • Another meat-loving town, Pittsburgh is packed with substantial carnivorous treats. Chipped, or chopped, or chipped-chopped ham is paper-thin slices of processed ham, stacked in a sandwich of Italian or white bread. Jumbo is the local lingo for bologna, and sandwich-lovers shouldn't leave town without hoisting a hoagie, 'burgh-speak for the submarine sandwich. Whichever chow you choose, wash it all down with an Iron, short for Iron City Beer, the local brew.
  • Ice cream lovers: the Klondike bar was born here in 1929 to Samuel Isaly, the same man who brought us chipped-chopped ham.
